Frances was 19 months old when her father died in 1994, aged 27. On the 30th anniversary of his death last April, she paid tribute to Kurt and also posted childhood photos of her and him.

“The second and third photos are of the last time we were together when he was still alive,” she wrote on Instagram. “His mother, Wendy, would often press my hands to her cheeks and say with reassuring sadness, 'You have his hands.' She would breathe it in as if it were her only chance to hold him a little closer, frozen in time. I hope she holds his hands wherever they are.

Frances said the biggest lesson she's learned through grief throughout most of her life is that “it serves a purpose.”

“The duality of life and death, pain and joy, yin and yang must coexist.” She wrote: “Otherwise none of this would have any meaning.

Frances said she wished she could have known her father.

“I wish I knew the tone of his voice, how he liked his coffee, or what it felt like to sleep after a bedtime story,” she said. “I always wondered if he would have caught tadpoles with me in the sweltering Washington summers, or if he would have smelled of Camel Lights and Strawberry Nesquik (his favorites, I was told).”

Frances continued: “But there is also deep wisdom in taking the quick route to understanding how precious life is. He gave me a lesson about death that can only be gained through the LIVED experience of losing someone. It is the gift of knowing with certainty when. “We love ourselves and those around us with compassion, openness and grace, which makes our time here all the more meaningful.”
