Selena Gomez asks Mariska Hargitay for parenting advice

Selena Gomez has been open about her “desire to become a mother” and recently shared that she is unable to carry her own children due to her chronic health issues. Now she asks her friend Mariska Hargitay how she juggles her busy acting career with raising three children, and Hargitay's answer is both real and refreshing.

The famous duo recently sat down for a chat interview magazine when Gomez asked about her life juggling her longtime role (25 years!) as detective Olivia Benson Law & Order: SVUwhile also raising her 17-year-old son August, 12-year-old son Andrew, and 12-year-old daughter Amaya, whom she shares with her husband, actor Peter Hermann.

“I wanted to ask a personal question, as someone who wants to become a mother,” Gomez began. “How does the compensation work? Because I remember picking up your kids from school one day and I really enjoyed that. This felt so normal and real. How do you balance that? Because one day I hope to do that.”

Offering both reassurance and some sage wisdom to Gomez, Hargitay replied, “And you will. “It's hard for all working moms,” she admitted.

“There were so many times that I was torn or frustrated because in our job you can't say, 'Guys, I'm not coming in today,'” she continued. “But I integrated them here. My children come to work with me. Are there things I miss? Yes. The flip side is that my kids are really proud of me. I talk to them a lot about what kind of life you want, who you want to be and how you want to spend your time. And what do you want to give back and who do you want to influence and what do you want to create?”

“And so I look at it now and think, yeah, I missed something,” she added. “There were days when the nanny did a little more and that was hard. But for the first year I took August to work with me every day. And you can too. It's doable. I am happier and live a more fulfilling life, and they feel and see that. And when I’m with them, I’m with them.”

It's always nice to hear famous moms acknowledge the helpers in their lives who make raising children a little easier, although not all parents are able to balance parenthood and career in the same way as Hargitay. That said, we commend her for finding a way to make it all work while sharing her goals and dreams with her children.

Gomez recently told us Vanity Fair that she “had to grieve” when she found out that she would not be able to bear her own children. “I've never said this before, but unfortunately I can't carry my own children,” she told the magazine. “I have many medical issues that would endanger my life and that of the baby. That was something I had to mourn for a while.”

The singer has opened up about her battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, since announcing her diagnosis in 2015. In April 2020, she also shared her diagnosis of bipolar disorder, telling her friend Miley Cyrus on Instagram Live that she was in a “much better place” amid her diagnoses and her future as parents.

“I think it's a blessing that there are wonderful people who are willing to take on surrogacy or adoption, both of which are huge opportunities for me,” she said at the time. “It made me really grateful for the other options available to people who are desperate to become mothers. I am one of those people. I'm excited to see what this journey will look like, but it will look a little different. At the end of the day, I don't care. It will be mine. It will be my baby.”
