Texas 2024 Voter Guide: How to Register to Vote in Houston and Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery and Surrounding Counties

At ABC13 Houston, we believe our democracy works best when everyone participates.

This year, Texas voters will vote for our next president and vice president, U.S. senator, congressional and state representative, and decide several judicial elections.

Your last day to register to vote is Monday, October 7, 2024.

Find your polling place

Texas does not offer online voter registration, but you can visit VoteTexas.gov to fill out your application, print it, sign it and send it by post. To be eligible to vote in the November general election, your registration form must be received or postmarked by the October 7 deadline.

You can also register to vote in person at your local polling place Office of the Registrar of Voters.

Even if you have already voted, you should check your registration again.

There were more than a million Texans removed from the electoral rolls since 2021, and the League of Women Voters told ABC13 that some voters were removed if they did not register in the last two federal elections.

Early voting begins Monday, October 21st and runs through Friday, November 1st.

Election day is Tuesday, November 5th.

Absentee voting in Texas is limited to voters who:

  • From 65 years
  • Sick or disabled
  • The birth is expected to occur within three weeks of Election Day
  • Outside the county on Election Day and during the early voting period
  • Locked in prison but otherwise eligible
  • Committed under civil law Chapter 841 of the Texas Health and Safety Code

The last day to register to vote by mail in Texas is Friday, October 25th.

What you can (and cannot) bring with you to the election.

All voters must present one of the following photo IDs:

  • Texas driver's license issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
  • Texas Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
  • Texas ID card issued by DPS
  • Texas handgun license issued by DPS
  • United States military ID card containing the person's photograph
  • Certificate of United States citizenship containing the person's photograph
  • United States passport (book or card)

You can still vote if you don't have or can't afford one of these photo IDs. You must fill out an Statement of Reasonable Obstacle at the ballot box and present a copy or original of one of the following approved forms of identification:

  • Notarized domestic birth certificate or court-admissible birth certificate
  • Current electricity bill
  • Bank statement
  • Government check
  • Paycheck
  • Government document with your name and an address, including your voter registration certificate

If you need assistance, voters may request assistance from anyone other than the voter's employer, a representative of the voter's employer, or an official or representative of a union to which the voter belongs.

You may not use any wireless communications device or any device that records audio, images or video within 100 feet of a polling place. These include smartphones, digital cameras or sound recorders. Election judges have the authority to require anyone to turn off or deactivate devices.

Even if you are excited to vote for a particular candidate, you should not wear campaign t-shirts, pins, hats, or other accessories to the polls. This is considered electioneering and is not permitted within 100 feet of polling locations.
