What you should know about the film based on JD Vance's Hillbilly Elegy

Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance will face off for 90 minutes Tuesday night at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City in the only vice presidential debate before the Nov. 5 election.

Walz, 60, the Minnesota governor and former high school teacher, and Vance, 40, a best-selling author and conservative firebrand senator from Ohio, will both claim their Midwest roots while defending themselves — and their respective parties' candidates: Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former President Donald Trump.

Which movie is based on the book by JD Vance?

JD Vance's 2016 memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” detailed his family's tumultuous family background and upbringing in rural Ohio. In 2020, a film adaptation was released directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams. Distributed by Netflix, the film received mixed reviews but received two Oscar nominations: Best Supporting Actress for Close and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Although Vance has written a memoir about his humble beginnings, voters have a negative view of him, Reuters/Ipsos polls show. 51% of registered voters said they view him negatively, compared to 39% who view him positively. That's in contrast to Walz, whom 44% of registered voters view favorably, while 43% expressed an unfavorable opinion in the Sept. 20-23 poll.
